THE WALL
de Vânia Rovisco
Devised by Vania Rovisco
A work suspended between performance and installation, the wall was conceived as a site specific, durational (4 hours) performance object that floated between the (re)presentation of social space of and the presentation of an artistic object.
The site specific work dealt with time and space, using natural light as a container, for the performance was placed in front of a large glass window. Throughout the evening light would become dimmer and dimmer, gradually drawing the audiences perception of the body perceived mostly by the plasticity invoked by the colour of the garments, for all visible body partes of the performers where covered in green clay, the same colour tone of the wall directly behind them, thus constantly becoming, unbecoming the wall.
The movement, continuous and slowest in motion bathed in natural light would over time seemingly vanish, focusing on the presence and placement of the body caught within an endless narrative. Each performer decided when to unglue from the wall and naturally walk towards the social area of the event and socialize, normally, with the public and consequently decide when to return to the place of action.
The intent, to place parallel discourses of self product in social enviornments, readings of as from others instinctively connect to that of our own perceptions of ourselves directly in dialogue with a performance based practice.
By leaving and returning to and from the wall falling into action or into social mode, the audience was led to deal with his own relation with how to engage, experience, when in self-performance or when, how to change to perceive a performative body.
